David 2009-11-03T19:46:22Z 2010-03-02T05:29:25Z
Spring Design Files Lawsuit against Barnes & Noble : Nook Violates Alex Intellectual Property

CUPERTINO, CA - November 2, 2009 - Spring Design today filed a lawsuit to protect its Alex™ e-book intellectual property. The lawsuit asserts Barnes & Noble misappropriated trade secrets and violated the parties' non-disclosure agreement when it copied Alex' features into its recently announced Nook e-book.

"Spring Design unfortunately had to take the appropriate action to protect its intellectual property rights," said Spring Design Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Eric Kmiec. "We showed the Alex e-book design to Barnes & Noble in good faith with the intention of working together to provide a superior dual screen e-book to the market."

Spring Design first developed and began filing patents on its Alex e-book, an innovative dual screen, Android-based e-book back in 2006. Since the beginning of 2009 Spring and Barnes & Noble worked within a non-disclosure agreement, including many meetings, emails and conference calls with executives ranging up to the president of Barnes and Noble.com, discussing confidential information regarding the features, functionality and capabilities of Alex. Throughout, Barnes & Noble's marketing and technical executives extolled Alex's "innovative" features, never mentioning their use of those features until the public disclosure of the Nook.

Alex, with its unique Duet Navigator™, provides the capability for interaction and navigation techniques of the two screens and furthermore utilizes the capabilities of Android to enhance the reader's experience by supporting interactive access to the Internet for references and links. As the first in the market to offer an e-book with full Internet browsing while reading and with easy navigational control via its touch screen, Alex is well-positioned to offer the most dynamic and powerful reading device in the market.

Spring Design is focused at working strategically with book store partners to jointly develop the market and revolutionize e-book with interactive multi-media open Internet access. "It is our desire to resolve this matter so that we can move forward together to expand and grow this e-book market with enriched user experience, bringing readers to a new level of reading enjoyment," said Eric Kmiec.

About Spring Design: Spring Design, founded in 2006, delivers innovative e-reader solutions and products to the e-book market, offering overall "Link Notes", a content authoring and multi-media publishing tool as add on editions to original text. Spring Design is located in Cupertino, California with engineering offices in Taiwan and China. Spring Design pioneered its patent-pending dual screen design with Duet Navigator™ capability in 2006, and has been working with major book stores, newspapers and publishers over the last two years, sharing the vision and the capabilities of the dual screen device. Spring Design's innovative patented technologies incorporate the seamless interaction of dual display and multi-online access in a single device, benefiting and leveraging the technology and resources of the Web to enhance the reading experience with open Internet access.
http://ereaderquestions.com/questions/66/look-of-the-e-book-page "look" of the e-book page newbie 2009-12-01T19:35:11Z 2010-03-01T15:36:38Z
How does the "page" look on an e-reader vs. a page in a book? Is one better than the other? Rafael Calsaverini 2009-11-10T22:54:54Z 2010-02-23T21:54:53Z
I was thinking about buying an ebook reader but a friend of mine who got a Kindle 2 International told me he have problems with academic pdf with equations. As kindle have no native pdf support (and I'm really not wanting to buy a Kindle dx - too expensive) he had to use Amazon's conversion service and the equations are not correctly converted.

I usually read lots of articles in pdf with lots of big equations and graphs so I'm concerned about buying a reader that cannot render this things right. Had any of you had a bad experience with this kind of stuff?

If I buy a reader with native pdf support like Nook will I have this problem?

Another thing that bothers me is about how comfortable it is to read a typically formated scientific article like this one for example: http://arxiv.org/pdf/0911.1313v1

How many paragraphs will fit in the screen with a decent font size? Will changing the fonts size ruin the formatting of the equations? Will the equations be correctly displayed?

Well. Thanks in advance for the answers.
http://ereaderquestions.com/questions/78/are-sequential-readers-nook-kindle-etc-the-best-choice-for-newspapers-and-mag Are sequential readers (Nook, Kindle, etc) the best choice for Newspapers and Magazines? Auga 2009-12-05T07:02:43Z 2009-12-05T07:02:43Z
WHAT I DO NEED: -Copy and paste functionality from PDF to some sort text/word processor (for notes); -Minimum ability to write text (easier is always better though) -Ability to somehow convert text to something usable on a PC (it can take a couple steps if needed)

WHAT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE: -At least 75 MB in memory (Its OK if I needed to get an extra card to make this happen) -Audio text translater in away where it would be simple ti listen to books while driving (e/g headphone jack) -Cheaper obviously better. I'd be willing to go up to $200 or so for something perfect, but will keep cost in mind for all items above $50

WHAT I DON'T NEED: - I don't care about getting online at all (i.e. have plenty of PDFs through my job) -Wouldn't spend an extra $75+ on e-ink over typical computer display.

Unless all the extra $ is for the e-ink, I don't see why ereaders aren't cheaper than the cheapest laptops, which is why I doubt I'd go for a Kindle etc. I'm also OK with the old school ereaders if they meet the above requirements. My biggest concern, though is the note-taking ability since I will mainly use this thing for research.

Should I keep waiting for my ideal item to be developed or is it already out there?

Thanks, a
http://ereaderquestions.com/questions/62/iriver-story-specs iRiver Story Specs J-Mill 2009-11-28T03:23:32Z 2009-12-05T05:03:14Z
What's the story behind iRiver Story?
